Orlando, Florida Community and Support Group for Widows
Our Mission for Widows
We serve to empower widows to lean into life, build resilience and make a positive difference in society.
Modern Widows Club is designed to create a safe and private environment for widows to lean into life together through the journey.
We are the club no one wants to be in because you only get in by virtue of experiencing a great loss. Yet what I hope you find once you’re here is that you’re surrounded by a community of really amazing women that you can lean on and learn from. We’re widows helping widows to live- to go upward and onward. Sometimes we cry and sometimes we laugh. We talk about how to tackle challenges without our partners’ help and cheer each other on. We often share food as we do this, because who doesn’t like to eat?
When a woman loses her loved one she tends to feel very alone. Regardless of her age or circumstances, she will benefit from other women in her life who understand the unique challenges she is now faced with. She needs women who will build her up and encourage her in this new life she walks. We are stronger together. No woman is an island. We need each other.

Meet Our Community Advocates
Jeanice Y.
Jeanice was 57 years old in 2009 when life changed for her in an instant. She and her husband were on a motorcycle ride one Saturday afternoon when a man in a truck ran a red light. Jeanice became a widow that day. Even though she has lived in the Orlando area since the mid-1980’s, she was not introduced to Modern Widows Club until 2018 when her friend Gina invited her to an empowerment weekend. She is excited about sharing her journey, and growing with her Wisters now in her role as co-advocate for the Orlando MWC Community.
Her 37 years of marriage to Hank had been blessed with three children, now two son-in-laws and five grandchildren. Her family, their support, love & activities area daily blessing. After Hank’s death, Jeanice and her children started a foundation and began having charity golf events to raise money for under-served families.
Jeanice is a retired RN and now, when asked what she does, she states, “I am a professional volunteer!” She has volunteered for years at local golf event supporting the Arnold Palmer charities, multiple activities with her church, and now volunteers with Modern Widows Club. She loves to stay active enjoying walking, yoga, Zumba, dancing, golf and traveling.
Janet D.
Janet’s father died in May 2005, and her husband died in February 2006. Her son, Joey, just turned 6 years old, and he lost the 2 male role models in his life within 9 months of each other. At the time of her husband’s death, she realized that it was up to her to raise their son.
Janet owns a travel agency and has come to focus on helping widows with travel for themselves and their families. When asked how she’s gotten through, she always answers, “I have faith. I could not do it without God”. Janet loves sharing her love & laughter with others and has volunteered to share her insight with other widows. She is into health and wellness and loves the natural approach first with her Young Living essential oils, friends & family, playing golf and traveling.
Karen W.
Karen lost her husband Joe, due to COVID in May 2021. She was fortunate to find Modern Widows club a month after he passed. She attended her first community zoom call at 6 weeks, attended her first Women’s Empowerment Event (WEE) at 4 months and participated in PIVOT January 2022. She has been very active with the Orlando community and is excited to take on a new role as co-advocate.
Karen was married to Joe for 33 years and they have one son, Joe Jr. Joe Jr married in 2019 and she now has a daughter too. Karen is a native of Florida and has always lived in the Central Florida. She is twin and is the younger one. She has a 2yr. mini golden doodle “Snickers” that keeps her very active!! Karen works full-time for a university and is the director of financial aid operations. She has been there for 28 years and enjoys seeing students achieve their educational goals and often life-long dreams.
Dee B.
Darrell and I married on June 23, 2005, after dating for 1 year while we lived and worked in Northern Virginia. He was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in October 2008 and had surgery in December 2008 to remove his Prostate. I was told, "We got it all". That was definitely a day to celebrate! Darrell always wanted to live in Florida, and while he was home recuperating from surgery, he was searching Florida Real Estate. Every search engine he went to took him to the same house. We closed on that home in February 2009 in Winter Park, FL, in preparation for our 2014 retirement. In March, we found out that his cancer had spread to his bones and he would have to begin chemo. He finished his first round of chemo in February 2010 and his new scans in June showed further bone mets and the probability of 18 months max. We decided to take early retirement (he was a Production Manager in the Printing and Graphics Dept at the U.S. Senate and I worked in the nonprofit world as a Crisis Counselor) and move to Florida in October 2010 to have time together.
We definitely took a leap of faith by moving with 2 mortgages, NO jobs and an uncertain future. He continued chemo treatments and his health continued to deteriorate. I was his sole caregiver until he passed in August 2017 after 74 chemo treatments, numerous experimental drugs, radiation, and numerous treatment-related hospital stays.
I found MWC in November 2019…..just before the world shut down. Finding this group was the best thing that ever happened to me. I enjoy the time I have met some amazing women. I host Pool Parties/Potlucks at my house on Holidays, so no one has to be alone, including New Year's Eve Jammie parties. I am a certified self-defense instructor and offer classes to MWC members to help empower my Wisters.
I am looking forward to being a Community Advocate and continuing to empower our ladies as they journey through the grief process.
